Smiley is in great company here, working alongside members of tUnE-yArDs, Rising Appalachia, Band of Joy and Solas, and together the ensemble deliver the best parts of indie, Americana and folk.

While Smiley handles accordion, banjo, piano, some strings and, most importantly, stunning vocal work, the long list of help on hand offer percussion, vocals, strings and guitars, which might lead one to think it’s a busy affair. However, much of the album is sparse, and fueled by powerful songs, layers of vocals, and unique body percussion that were inspired by Smiley’s trip to the Ukraine that only reinforced the strength of her songcraft.

While world music might be an appropriate tag present, Smiley is also well versed in diverse balladry and Eastern European influences, all of which unfold here with much sophistication. An album with a deep desire to communicate, Unzip The Horizon is a journey of timeless, poetic beauty.
